Hemp Industry & Farmers of America – Statement on Governor Abbott’s Executive Order

September 10, 2025

“Gov. Greg Abbott’s hemp executive order aims to implement safeguards put forward by Texas farmers and industry leaders: 21+ age restrictions, truth in labeling, and school zone protections – standards that actually exceed those of other industries. While the Governor has taken initial positive action to protect Texas agriculture and businesses, those executing on the EO must carefully balance necessary regulation and prevent havoc for the entire industry. It’s critical to avoid language from the failed HB 309 model – a bill that mirrored the detrimental language that catered to medical marijuana monopolies and devastated hemp industries in states like Virginia – that would jeopardize the livelihoods of nearly 60,000 Texans and an almost $8 billion industry. We urge leaders to collaborate with farmers and businesses to preserve the investments of Texans who established their operations in good faith, under existing federal guidelines and in partnership with state agencies.” – HIFA Executive Director Brian Swensen
